Vedha Automations

The Apparel Industry

Specific Requirements

Automation needs of apparel industry in the areas of Retailing and Supply Chain Management are unique in nature. The following factors hold good. Click on each bullet point to see more details.

Non-repeating SKU:
Many items rarely repeat as it may not be manufactured again.
This results in fairly large number of SKU, many of them not offered at a given point of time yet carried through for past reference
Size-Color Matrix:
The different styles of garment will be available in multiple sizes  like S, M, L, XL ... and may be different colors.
It makes sense to look at the stocks / sales etc., of styles with the figures pertaining to all sizes listed in a single line (columnar)
Style/Article Reference:
A particular style may come in various sizes and colors.
While an SKU will indicate a particular garment of a particular size and color, references need to be made in reports and other situation to the Style which will include all the sizes and colors it comes in.
Besides, normally a particular Style/Article is saleable only if it is available in all the sizes.
Reports need to be available to get information on size and color-wise availability of given style or range of styles
Need for maintaining look-up for sizes and colors:
Typographical errors to be avoided by validating sizes and color values keyed-in against look-ups maintained
Yet again, sizes need to be catalogued with reference to the Product (at times even brand)
Order of listing of sizes should be user definable. Note, letters S, M, L and XL are not in alphabetical order yet most acceptable!
Product Classifications:
Classifications may be lateral rather than hierarchical like Men's range - Ladies' - Formals - Casuals - Outdoor - Indoor.
Provision should be available to define multiple Super-Classifications such that the same item may be classified differently for different purposes of analysis/reporting
Seasonality:
Merchandise are offered according to seasons like Spring-Summer'2001, Autumn-Winter'2002 etc
ERROR MSGThis forms another crucial classification in analyzing and making merchandising decisions.
Off-season or end-of-season stock need to be cleared at discounts. Thus such stock need to be segregated
Product-Attributes:
These include: Styling, Fabric Fiber (like Cotton , Wool , etc), Finish (like Solids, Stripes, Floral prints etc)
Sub attributes include color base, minor aspects of garment styling etc
Due to the fact that many SKU do not repeat, for the purposes of stock and sales analysis a retailer has to look at the merchandise on the basis of their attributes like Button-down white formal shirt , Four-button double-breast blazer  etc., Again, the attributes are specific to each product range.
Quality:
Apparel is one of the few industries wherein even if a finished product is not up to the mark it can be sold ... at a reduced price as seconds in a clearance sale or seconds sale.
Similarly, once displayed first quality merchandise may get converted to
