The elections have become a battleground in which the candidates attack and criticize each other sharply. Freedom of speech is only allowed if one supports the candidate that the person or group one is addressing believes in; otherwise one is unamerican and are given the suggestion that they ought to leave the country. What a state we are in! Surely, our Founding Fathers did not want for all of this hate and discontent to be part of what The United States is about.
It is not suprising, however, when one is a Republican or a Democrat to have no Senator or Representative representing one's views, that it leaves one frustrated and discontented- a fertile ground for the hate and negative words that are flying around like missles.
Every state has two senators. If each state senators were one of each party, (one Republican and one Democrat) I feel we would have less division and more compromising than we do now. Certainly, then, the issues might be talked about instead of whether one showed up 20 years ago for military duty or served on a Swift boat or once spoke against the Vietnam War. Maybe we would listen to one another instead of tearing each other down. Maybe we would have to work together.
Perhaps, we might once again be 'THE UNITED STATES' instead of people on the brink of a civil war. Maybe we could even come up with a creative idea to have both parties equally representing each state in the House of Representatives. We preach what a glorious thing freedom is and in the meantime we are verbally assassinating each other.
Think about it.

My only misgiving is this re-enforces a 2 party system that I think is very unhealthy. Remember that the Republican and Democratic parties were once themselves 3rd parties. But maybe that can be configured into this idea. This will certainly lead to gridlock, but sometimes gridlock is a good thing. Now that the Banana Republican Party and the Bush Crime Family control things, gridlock is our only hope for sane policy. bob said @ 10/09/2004 09:55 AM CST | Weblog Archives Bob's favorites: Democracy Now!
